Margaret Mason KC is a recently retired charities lawyer with more than 35 years of experience advising donors, charities and other tax-exempt organizations and their boards, often on highly sensitive and complex matters. In addition to advising on gift plans, incorporations, charitable registration, governance, fundraising and Canada Revenue Agency audit matters, she helped clients consider operational structures that allow them to navigate complex legal and regulatory environments particularly regarding the creation of multi-use affordable housing projects, social enterprises and gifts of ecologically sensitive land.
She was a director and past-chair of Imagine Canada, the Canadian Sports Institute – Pacific and many other organizations. She is currently the appointee of the Province of British Columbia and the chair of the 2010 Games Operating Trust which provides legacy funding to the Olympic and Paralympic venues constructed for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Vancouver, BC, as well as a trustee of the David Spencer Trust which provides funding to the arts, and the secretary-treasurer of the Saint Mary’s Health Foundation of New Westminster.
In 2023 she received the Jane Burke-Robertson Award of Excellence in Charity and Non-Profit Law.
She speaks and teaches widely in the areas of governance, regulatory compliance and board skill development.
