Ahmed is just five years old, but he has already overcome more than most people face in a lifetime. Born with a rare genetic condition that causes muscle weakness and atrophy, he faces immense challenges every day. Walking, talking, eating, and even breathing require constant support, yet Ahmed’s spirit remains bright.

Against the odds, he has outlived the typical life expectancy for his condition. Today, he is thriving at Safehaven, where he has found both the support he needs and a place to belong.

One of the most remarkable parts of Ahmed’s journey is how he has learned to communicate. Using advanced eye gaze technology, he can express his thoughts, needs, and emotions simply by using his eyes to interact with a screen. This powerful and life-changing tool demonstrates just how much is possible with the right support.

In many ways, Ahmed is just like any other child. He attends public school, loves watching Paw Patrol, and recently found something every child deserves: a best friend.

Ahmed’s story is a powerful example of resilience and the incredible outcomes that happen when children with complex medical needs are truly seen and supported.

For more than 35 years, Safehaven has been providing exceptional care for children, youth, and young adults with disabilities and complex medical conditions. With six locations across the GTA and York Region, Safehaven supports more than 200 families each year.

With demands for their services at historic highs, Safehaven is growing to meet this need by redeveloping their flagship site in downtown Toronto. This innovative project will expand their services and deliver the right care in the right place, and ensuring that no one is left behind because of the complexity of their care.
